Week of Monday, February 12

On Monday, I am scheduled to meet with Hawaii Department of Agriculture Chairman Sandra Kunimoto to discuss agricultural issues.

Later Monday afternoon, I meet with Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Phil Grone to discuss readiness, installation, and the environment.

University of Hawaii President David McClain, Vice President for Research Jim Gaines, Associate Vice President for Research Dan Ishii, and UH Foundation President Donna Vuchinich will come by my office to provide an update on UH activities.

On Tuesday, my Veterans' Affairs Committee continues to discuss the President's FY 2008 budget proposal as it relates to veterans.

Later Tuesday afternoon, I am scheduled to meet with Moira Chapin and Emily Figdor, of U.S. PIRG, to discuss global climate change and the new energy future.

Representatives from the Coalition for Drug Free Lanai will visit my office to provide an update on projects.

Tuesday evening, I will receive the National Emergency Management Association's Congressional Recognition Award at a reception in the Senate.

Later Tuesday evening, I will be attending ceremonies commemorating the opening of Oceanit's new office in Crystal City, VA. Oceanit is a Hawaii science and engineering tech company.

On Wednesday, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee deliberates on S. 4, legislation to implement additional 9/11 Commission recommendations.

Our Senate Banking Committee meets with Federal Reserve System Chairman Ben Bernanke as he delivers his Semiannual Monetary Policy Report to Congress.

Wednesday afternoon, I meet with US Joint Forces Commander General Lance Smith to discuss his command priorities and the War on Terror.

I will address the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs luncheon. Our State Directors are here for their mid-winter conference.

Also scheduled for Wednesday afternoon are meetings with representatives from the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties and the Hawaii State Association of Letter Carriers.

Chairman of the Hawaii Department of Hawaiian Homelands Micah Kane will stop by my office to update me on Hawaiian Homelands projects.

Thursday morning, our Armed Services Committee meets with General Peter Schoomaker and General James Conway to discuss readiness as it relates to the Army and the Marine Corps.

Senate Energy Committee meets to continue its review of the President's FY 2008 budget for the Department of the Interior.

Later Thursday morning, Hawaii Arts Alliance CEO Marilyn Cristofori and board member Gail Hannemann will be by my office to update me on their activities and discuss funding for the arts.

Thursday afternoon, I meet with leaders from the National Alliance for Filipino Vets Equity to discuss S. 57, the Filipino Veterans Equity Act of 2007. I am an original cosponsor of S. 57, which was introduced by Sen. Daniel Inouye.
